The fall in prices followed news that Indonesia has lifted its ban on palmkernel oil and palm stearin exports temporarily until March 14. However, business was slow and traders said no one was getting too excited. "This is the first good news we have had for some time, but most people were expecting such a move by the Indonesians as they need to clear some tanks for crude palm oil," said one trader. Trade sources in Indonesia said the department of the Trade and Industry Ministry had faxed statements to them on Tuesday saying the ban would be lifted until March 14. The country had banned exports of these products as part of an overall embargo on palm oil product exports to help keep the local cooking oil market supplied in the run-up to presidential elections in the first half of March. The statement said that 18 companies were now allowed to export these products but only up to a limit equal to 60 percent of their stearin stocks. Indonesian trade sources said the amount of stearin authorised for export is 56,050 tonnes while the quantity of palm kernel oil allowed is 78,678 tonnes. The statement said the ministry reached its decision after considering recent developments in the supply of cooking oil to the local market, but gave no further details. Traders said there were also rumours in the market about the export ban on crude palm oil. Talk centred around reports of a television broadcast in Indonesia. "It seems a broadcast on SCTV was broken into and an announcement to the effect that Indonesia would comply fully with the IMF conditions from March one was made. People are taking this to mean that the export ban on crude palm oil will be lifted from that date," said one trader. However when contacted by Reuters the station was unable to confirm the content of the broadcast and later the state television station TVRI reported that the ban on crude palm oil and olein would continue until local prices of cooking oil stabilised. "As usual it is very hard to get any official word about what is going on. But frankly I won't believe the ban is off until I have a vessel loaded with crude palm oil and even than I will not believe it until the ship reaches international waters," said another trader. At the close of business in Europe crude palm oil was offered at $685 s tonne for March, $5 down and $605 for Jul/Sep $15 lower. Traders said these were the first solid offers they had seen for some time. Among the products RBD palm oil was $7.50 to $5 lower and olein $7.50 to $10 down. But as expected stearin had the biggest falls in the palm oil sector with closing sellers $20 to $12.50 lower. Coconut oil offers were $30 to $17.50 down after Mar/Apr traded early in the day at $570 and Apr/May at $575 a tonne cif during the afternoon. Soft oils were quiet, but tending to drift lower on the back of the Indonesian news. Soy oil closed 0.50 guilders up to one guilder down while rape oil was 0.50 guilders down to unchanged.
