In a session marked by an unusually light trading volume of just 2,374 lots, prices drifted in the plus column from the opening bell. A strong showing in London overnight helped to spark an early round of industry-linked buying, but profit taking at the highs prevented any further advance. Some traders said that a downturn in many other commodity markets also capped today's gains. Most-active May futures settled up $10 at $1,557 a tonne after trading from $1,555 to $1,564. Front-month March gained $13 to $1,518, while the back months finished $8 to $11 higher. Traders said the market still held onto some upside potential, noting the shift by speculators to a net short stance. According to CFTC's Commitments of Traders figures released after the of business last Friday, speculators were net short 3,183 lots as of Feb 10, following a net long position of more than 2,000 lots two weeks earlier. "The spec position in the market could produce something of a rally, but it's still within the framework of the downtrend we've been in since the start of the crop year," one broker said. On the charts, May faces initial resistance at $1,565, followed by $1,575. Support was noted in the mid $1,530s, and then at the recent low of $1,511. 181122 MET feb 98
