Bearing the pressure of liquidation and switches leading up to Friday's first notice day in the last three weeks, the selling dried up leaving room for a technical correction to the upside, commission house brokers said. The active May contract settled at $1,547 a tonne, up $20 from Thursday's close, while the March contract jumped $30 to $1,505 at tonne. The rest of the board rose $20 to $21. The March-May spread collapsed to $43 after rocketing over the previous three sessions to a life of contract high of $52 Thursday. "The speculative and trade longs did everything they needed to do already," said one commission house broker. "By the time first notice day rolled around, there wasn't anything left to be done. That opened the way up for some buying." The nearby March contract plummeted $182, or 11 percent, in the last three weeks, as the longs rolled their positions or liquidated. "The buying seemed to be technical in nature," another broker said. "The market looked oversold on a number of indicators. So we retraced a little bit. "We probably have another $30 to $40 to go on the upside, before we're done," he added. "But the general trend is lower." There was little fundamental news for the market to use Friday. "Fundamentally, we're still looking at a strong crop in West Africa," said a trader. "There's plenty of cocoa around. No one's really worried. As long as that's the case, the longer term trend is lower." Technical resistance was pegged at $1,535 a tonne, which corresponds to the 10-day moving average and a 38.2 percent retracement of the downtrend that began with the January 27 high of $1,647 a tonne. On the downside, support was pegged at Thursday's low of $1,465 a tonne. 161521 MET feb 98
