Dealings once again centered on the nearby switch, with March's discount to May widening $11 to $52 ahead of first notice day on Friday. "It was a classic pre-notice day washout," one broker said. "We had a lot of fund liquidation, and probably some nervous trade liquidation as well." Prices tumbled by as much as $34 at one point before a round of buying from the manufacturing sector helped to bring the market back from the lows. Most-active May futures fell $18 per tonne on the day to $1,527, after trading from $1,511 to $1,547. Spot March slid $29 to $1,475, while the back months all lost $18. Fundamentally, continued signs of healthy production in West Africa gave buyers little reason to pay up in the futures market, traders said. The International Cocoa Organization on Thursday said global cocoa production would trail demand by 145,000 tonnes, largely in line with other industry projections. While the world cocoa market has operated at an annual deficit for several years, large carry-over stocks have protected against any inventory shortfall.
