They said a poor showing in Asian financial markets on Friday reignited concerns that U.S. exports to Pacific Rim nations could be adversely impacted. "It's another Asia scare," said one trader. "The market was very, very weak today, I think, based on Indonesia. The devaluation of the rupiah made the market nervous there would be cancellations." The rupiah on Friday fell by 10 percent to 8,000 against the U.S. dollar, but managed to recover from the 9,000 level seen earlier in the day. The trader said some market participants feared the USDA would further reduce its estimate for Indonesian imports. In the February supply/demand report, USDA pegged Indonesian imports at 1.9 million 480-lb bales, down from an estimated 2.05 million bales in its January forecast. Benchmark March cotton closed 0.57 cent lower, at 66.24 cents, its lowest settlement since January 29, after ranging between 66.65 and 65.80 cents. Second-month May fell 0.56 cent to 67.67 cents, while the remaining months finished down 0.10 to 0.71 cent. Some traders said both the technical and fundamental outlook pointed to another move to the downside, with many traders predicting the March contract could retest its life-of-contract low of 64.49 cents. "The whole situation is not bullish," said Prudential Securities cotton specialist Ernest Simon. "There is a tremendous amount of cotton in the world and every country, including the U.S., still has a lot of unsold cotton. "There is still this fear of the Far east situation and uncertainty about cancellations," he added. "I would not be surprised to see March test the low." Volume Friday was brisk at an estimated 18,000 lots, nearly triple Thursday's official tally of 6,790 lots. 161526 MET feb 98
