The underlying weakness of prices, coupled an uncertain forward sales outlook for yarn, kept most buyers on the sidelines. Although, attractively discounted trade offers of west African and central Asian cottons, aroused some interest, notably in Portugal and Belgium. Note was also taken of the somewhat cheaper appearance of the new crop offers emanating from Argentina and Paraguay. In Eastern Europe, the tightness of financial credit continued to constrain offtake. Long staples varieties were once again generally neglected. 131317 MET feb 98
