Most-active March futures rose 0.70 cent a lb on the day to 100.45 cents, ending just above the closely watched $1 threshold. Second-position May gained 0.45 to close at 103.45 cents a lb. Business was exceedingly thin throughout the session, with turnover amounting to a mere 1,700 lots by the close. Nervousness about next year's crop in Brazil continued to underpin the market, but some dealers said they expected speculators to begin liquidating longs ahead of first notice day in March in three week's time. "People are still concerned about the Brazilian factor, and the trade isn't willing to sell into it," one broker said. Looking to next week, traders awaited the U.S. Department of Agriculture's next estimate of the Florida orange crop, due out on Wednesday.
