Traders said activity was light, with speculative short-covering and outright buying accounting for the much of the day's gains. Trade interest was noted on both sides of the market, they said. "The market was quiet," said a trader. "I think it's just going the way it has the last three or four months," he added. "It makes new lows and then tries to consolidate, but there's always a lot of overhead pressure." March cotton settled 0.23 cent higher, at 65.21 cents, after ranging between 65.40 and 64.96 cents. Second-month May rose 0.22 cent to 66.42 cents, while the remaining months finished unchanged to up 0.13 cent. Traders said this morning's spec/hedge report, which showed a very slight increase in the speculative net short position, had little impact on the market. The NYCE data showed speculators as of January 23 were net short 24.3 percent, compared with a 24.2 percent net speculative short position the previous week. On the charts, traders said the March contract faced resistance at today's high of 65.40 cents, followed by 65.85-65.90 cents and 66.30 cents. Support was seen near the 64.65 cents and 64.00 cents. Volume reached an estimated 8,500 lots, down from Monday's official tally of 12,350 lots. 281049 MET jan 98
