The USDA report estimated that the 1997/98 crop would be 18.977 million baled compared to 18.82 million bales in December's estimate. Market estimates fell between 18.40 million and 18.90 million bales. Adding insult to injury was heavy selling throughout the CRB Index and the U.S. stock market, traders said. "The crop estimate took this market by surprise," one trader said. "It was above the range of most of the estimates. So once we broke below the previous low of 65.75 cents a lb (in the March contract) we ran most of the stops out of the market." In an anomoly, Friday's crop estimate came without the usual accompanying supply and usage report, which is expected Tuesday at 0830 EST/1330 GMT, which delays the arrival of the bullish news in the market. "Most of the bullish news in the market is in the supply and usage report and that comes out Tuesday," said Richard Drachenberg, owner of Drachenberg Trading. "Exports are expected to be higher. Consumption is also expected to improve." David Brandon Jr, an analyst with Smith Barney, noted, "These lower price levels should generate good export demand" from Europe and possibly China. The CRB Index fell to its lowest level since April 1994, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average is at its lowest level since in two months as of 1541 EST. 121129 MET jan 98
