Mladic apologises for insulting witness

ZAGREB/THE HAGUE, Aug 24 (Hina) - Hague war crimes tribunal indictee Ratko Mladic apologised at his trial on Friday for insulting prosecution witness Aernout van Lynden, Serbia's Beta news agency reported.

The former Bosnian Serb military leader, accused of genocide against non-Serbs in Bosnia and Herzegovina, apologised "to everyone" through his lawyer Branko Lukic in the closed part of the hearing, but Judge Bakone Moloto relayed it in the court room later.

On Monday, when his mike was switched off, Mladic called van Lynden a "CIA spy" and a "lying cur" and said that he "didn't count the dead Serbs."

Lukic said in court today that Mladic's overreaction to van Lynden's testimony was caused, among other things, by his deteriorating health condition. He said Mladic was "very upset" by the testimony, which he found false.

Judge Moloto did not accept the explanation and told Lukic to warn his client that he must behave if he wanted to follow the trial.
