Karadzic requests new trial at Hague war crimes tribunal

THE HAGUE, Aug 13 (Hina) - Former Bosnian Serb political leader Radovan Karadzic on Monday requested a new trial at the Hague war crimes tribunal, accusing the prosecution of lateness in the delivery of documents which acquit him, the UN court said, according to Agence France-Presse.

Karadzic is accused of genocide, crimes against humanity and violations of laws and customs of war committed in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992 to 1995, when about 100,000 people were killed and 2.2 million were displaced. He is also accused of the killing of 8,000 men and boys in Srebrenica in July 1995, the worst atrocity in Europe after World War Two.

Karadzic said in a motion that a new trial was the only solution for the proceedings to be equitable.

His trial was adjourned several times so that he could get acquainted with the documents.

He was indicted on 25 July 1995 and was transferred to the Hague tribunal's detention unit on 30 July 2008 after 13 years in hiding. The trial began on 26 October 2009.

The prosecution finished presenting the indictment on May 4 and is expected to start presenting evidence on October 16.

Karadzic, who pleaded not guilty, insists the prosecution presented 335,126 pages of documents and that it did not disclose most as soon as that was possible.
