Poznan mayor defusing tensions between football fans

POZNAN, June 10 (Hina) - After Saturday night's incidents between supporters of Lech Poznan and Croatia's Bad Blue Boys (BBB) in Poznan, the mayor of the Polish city, Ryszard Grobelny, on Sunday tried to defuse tensions between some Polish and Croatian football fans.

He said what happened last night was an isolated and minor incident that could not spoil the good relations between Polish, Croatian and Irish football fans.

The mayor said police would step up security to prevent such incidents, which he said were possible given the number of supporters in the city and the amount of alcohol that was being consumed.

Polish, Irish and Croatian football fans clashed in downtown Poznan last night, resulting in the arrest of 14 people, including one Croat.

The trouble began as a group of Lech Poznan supporters attacked the BBBs. The Irish were hurt in the fight as well.

One of those involved in the incident told Hina about 50 Lech Poznan supporters had attacked 30 BBBs. He said the fight lasted about ten minutes and that there were broken heads on both sides, with chairs, bottles and glasses flying.

The Polish police reported on the incident only on Sunday, after one of the participants posted a video of the fight online.
