Croatian foreign ministry welcomes EC's positive report on Montenegro

ZAGREB, May 24 (Hina) - The Croatian Foreign and European Affairs Ministry welcomes the European Commission's positive report on Montenegro's progress in reform implementation and its recommendation to the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament to open accession negotiations with Montenegro, the ministry said on Thursday.

The ministry was confident that adopting a decision to open entry talks with Montenegro at the EU Council of Ministers meeting next month would represent an additional incentive and further progress in the European integration of Montenegro as well as other countries in the region.

The ministry said it was willing to share its experience in accession and reforms with Montenegro and all other countries aspiring to join the EU.

The European Commission on Wednesday recommended opening accession negotiations with Montenegro, having assessed that it had made progress in the rule of law, the fight against corruption and organised crime as well as achieved the necessary level of alignment with European standards.

The final decision on the opening of the negotiations will be made by EU heads of state or government in June.
