Mostar court delivers ruling against ethnic segregation in schools

MOSTAR, April 29 (Hina) - The municipal court in the southern Bosnian town of Mostar has ruled as discriminatory the existence of two schools under one roof in the Stolac and Capljina areas where classes are taught separately for Croat and Muslim children, and ordered the establishment of uniform schools, the print media reported on Sunday.

Judge Rabija Tanovic said the existence of two schools under one roof was against the law banning discrimination and ordered the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton's education ministry to abolish the practice as of September 1.

The ruling was made on Friday following an ethnic discrimination lawsuit filed by the Your Rights association from Sarajevo. This is the first ruling in Bosnia regarding the ethnic segregation of children in schools.
