International community condemns Dodik's statement

MOSTAR, April 28 (Hina) - International officials in Bosnia and Herzegovina have dismissed as unacceptable the statement by Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik, made in Belgrade on Friday, that he is preparing for the disintegration of the country, saying that Republika Srpska cannot break away from Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Sarajevo newspaper Dnevni Avaz said on Saturday.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is an internationally-recognised state with full sovereignty and territorial integrity. There is no sustainable future for Republika Srpska outside Bosnia and Herzegovina and it can exist only as a part of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the US Embassy in Sarajevo said.

The Office of the international community's High Representative (OHR) said that Dodik was raising tensions, threatening peace and stability, adding that at the same time he was also threatening the existence of Republika Srpska.

The sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina are guaranteed by its constitution and by international law, including the Dayton peace agreement. Those who deny the territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina at the same challenge the legal existence of the Republika Srpska entity, which is defined by the Bosnia and Herzegovina Constitution and laid down in Annex 4 to the Dayton peace agreement, the OHR said.

Dodik was in Belgrade on Friday to attend a conference on the status and future of the Serbs in the countries of the region. He said there that Republika Srpska was "preparing for the disintegration" of Bosnia and Herzegovina and that Bosnia and Herzegovina was "an untenable creation".
