Limiting EU agriculture grants unacceptable to Croatia

BRUSSELS, April 27 (Hina) - The proposal by the European Commission to put upper limits on direct payments to farmers is not acceptable to Croatia because many Croatian producers have invested a lot to adjust themselves to EU standards and are burdened with long-term loans, according to an initial analysis.

This view was expressed by Croatian Deputy Agriculture Minister Snjezana Spanjol at a meeting of EU agriculture and fisheries ministers in Luxembourg on Thursday and Friday, which she attended as an observer.

"We can hardly support that at this moment because some of the farms and companies have invested very much in adjusting to EU standards and as a result are financially burdened with long-term loans," Spanjol told Hina, adding that this was shown by an initial analysis of the Commission's proposal to reform the Common Agricultural Policy for the 2014-2020 period.

The Commission has proposed setting upper limits for grants farmers may be awarded under the EU's Common Agricultural Policy. The upper limit would be 300,000 euros annually.
