Parliament on ratification of Croatia-Bulgaria police cooperation agreement

ZAGREB, April 19 (Hina) - Parliament began its sitting on Thursday by discussing the ratification of an agreement between the Croatian and Bulgarian governments on police cooperation which, according to Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic, establishes a contemporary legal framework for cooperation in accordance with current European standards.

Ostojic said the agreement continued the police cooperation between the two countries, recalling that the two governments signed the agreement in 1996 and the two interior ministries in 2005.

The agreement "is the result of the joint wish to promote and deepen cooperation in the fight against crime, the elimination of threats to public safety and public order, and in the prevention of crimes and the finding of their perpetrators," he said.

A proposal to ratify the Protocol on Privileges and Immunities of Southeast European Law Enforcement passed without discussion.

Croatia is a party to the agreement which established the SECI Centre for Combating Transborder Crime, which has been signed by 12 countries, and its successor is the Southeast European Law Enforcement Center, said Deputy Finance Minister Boris Lalovac.

A bill on the ratification of the Functional Airspace Block Central Europe agreement and a bill on the implementation of the Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council of 16 December 2008 on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures also passed without discussion.

Also today, the parliamentary groups endorsed a bill on certificates of originality, geographical indication and traditional reputation of agricultural and food products, urging domestic producers to obtain such certificates so as to protect their products on the European market.

The bill was aligned with EU regulations and enables producers of native agricultural and food products to apply for copyright on the EU level.

Agriculture Minister Tihomir Jakovina said the protection of products with those certificates also made them more competitive and allowed producers to have monopoly.

He said seven products in Croatia had the status of native products and that the certification of four more was under way.
