Croatian parliament speaker receives newly-appointed British ambassador

ZAGREB, April 19 (Hina) - Croatian Parliament Speaker Boris Sprem received the newly-appointed British Ambassador to Croatia, David Slinn, on Thursday.

Speaking of the ratification of Croatia's EU accession treaty, Slinn said it was absolutely important that a monitoring report on Croatia's compliance with the EU membership criteria should be favourable.

Sprem said that Croatia, as a NATO ally and a future partner within the European Union, wanted to enhance its relations with Britain. He said that Croatia attached the greatest importance to economic relations and that it saw much greater opportunities for investment, especially now that it was about to join the EU.

Sprem announced legislative amendments to stimulate foreign investment and expressed a wish for closer parliamentary cooperation.

Slinn said that Britain strongly supported Croatia's entry into the EU and that his country should take advantage of the new situation and a unique opportunity to increase British investment in Croatia ahead of its accession.
