Parliament discussing bill reintroducing possibility of rallies in St. Mark's Square

ZAGREB, April 27 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament began its session on Friday with a discussion on draft amendments to the Public Assembly Act, which again will allow public assembly in Zagreb's St Mark's Square, the seat of the Government, Parliament and the Constitutional Court.

Under the existing law, public protests are banned within 100 metres of the buildings housing the three institutions.

According to the bill presented by the Minister of Interior Ranko Ostojic, peaceful gatherings and protests may be held within a 10-metre diameter from the government, parliament and Constitutional Court buildings, with a maximum 1,500 participants, and they may take place between 8am and 10pm.

Rallies will have to be announced in advance five days before they take place or at least 48 hours in extraordinary circumstances.

The minister said the City of Zagreb would appropriately mark the space allocated for peaceful gatherings in this historical square in the upper-town Zagreb.

The bill also introduces some restrictions of the rights to the public assembly proportional to the country's needs to protect itself against terrorism and to protect office-holders, which requires such restriction in the event of rallies in St. Mark's Square.
