Parliamentary committee endorses report on participation of Croatian troops in UN missions

ZAGREB, April 25 (Hina) - The Croatian Parliament's Defence Committee on Wednesday endorsed the report on the involvement of Croatian troops in UN peace missions last year, which was presented by Defence Minister Ante Kotromanovic.

Kotromanovic announced that two Croatian army officers could participate in a future UN mission in Syria, adding that his ministry had received a request from the UN Secretary General for two officers.

"I don't think there should be any problems with that," Kotromanovic said. He said that the Defence Ministry would seek formal approval from Parliament and the President of the Republic to participate in the Syria mission.

The minister said in his report that about 120 Croatian troops were participating in seven UN missions, the largest one being the UNDOF on the Golan Heights. He said that no problems, either in terms of security or the professionalism of Croatian peacekeepers, had been registered. He said that the Croatian contingent serving in the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan would be gradually downsized in accordance with the alliance's exit strategy.
