HRW: Bosnia systematically violates rights of Jews and Roma

SARAJEVO, April 4 (Hina) - The US-based human rights organisation Human Rights Watch (HTW) says in a report released on Wednesday that Jews, Roma and other ethnic minorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina have been systematically discriminated against for nearly 20 years, noting that the discrimination stems from the country's constitution which was written in Dayton, Ohio, at the end of the Bosnian war in 1995.

The 62-page report, entitled "Second Class Citizens: Discrimination against Roma, Jews, and Other National Minorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina", analyses the position of ethnic minorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially Jews and Roma, in the last two decades. It says that ethnic minorities are practically excluded from political life because the constitution mandates a system of government based on ethnicity and excludes these groups from high political office. It warns that political discrimination against minorities has no place in a modern European country and that the present situation must change.
