A BRIEF LOOK AT CROATIAN PRESS ON TUESDAY

ZAGREB, Nov 8 (Hina) - "Western-Bosnian Refugees at Turanj - an Ecological Bomb" proclaims a front-page headline in today's issue of the VJESNIK. The article deals with Prime Minister Valentic's visit to Karlovac. VJESNIK's Hague correspondent reports that the International War-Crimes Tribunal has pressed charges against the commander of the Susica detention camp, Dragan Nikolic, who is currently "absconding from justice somewhere in Bosnia-Herzegovina." The paper announces a high-level UN meeting in Geneva, prompted by the escalation of conflict in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Vjesnik's law commentator Vlado Rajic discusses the eviction issue in an article headlined "Croatia Is Not Afraid to Thrash Out Evictions." "Thanks to the Croatian Helsinki Committee and the support and cooperation of other human-rights activists, the evictions have become a political issue which Croatia is no longer afraid to tackle," Rajic says, referring to recent Constitutional Court decisions which point to a possibility that Croatia might be interested in establishing the rule of law. An article by Ivica Marijacic, headlined "Everybody Knows but UNPROFOR," deals with the situation in UN Sector South. "Knin radio is broadcasting interview with irregulars from Obrovac (Serb-occupied part of Croatia) fighting on the Bihac front (western Bosnia). But UNPROFOR choses to play Doubting Thomas: do Croatian Serbs really fight in Bosnia? It is not true that the Serbs have withdrawn from the disengagement zone. On All Saints' Day, 80 armed Serbs were positioned in Pristeg (near Benkovac)," the article says. The paper quotes its new majority owners, Privredna Banka, as saying that they expected the editorial policy to continue being "balanced, objective and critical." VECERNJI LIST also writes of the recent Nikolic indictment and the impending Tadic hearing before the Hague Tribunal. A commentary by Ljubica Gataric deals with the situation in the union world. "Recent congresses of two major trade union federations, the Independent Trade Unions and the Croatian Federation of Trade Unions, showed that in the next two months, the union world will be dominated by two topics: labour legislation and collective agreements," the article says.
