NEW YORK, Nov 3 (Hina) - Bosnian Ambassador to the UN, Muhamed
Sacirbej, today opened a session of the UN General Assembly by
calling for the lifting of the Bosnia arms embargo.
"We cannot expect the inernational community to feed us
indefinitely, nor do we demand of others to fight our battles. But
we expect our right to self-defence and our wish to govern our fate
to be respected," Sacirbej said.
Sixteen representatives of Islamic Conference countries,
including Iran and Turkey, supported Sacirbej's call for the
lifting of the embargo - while the EU, Japan and the Ukraine warned
against serious consequences of such a step.
On behalf of the European Union, German Ambassador Detlev Graf
zu Rantzau said he would abstain from voting, as the EU could not
accept the lifting of the embargo.
