GRANIC'S STATEMENT AFTER RETURN FROM USA

ZAGREB, Oct 4 (Hina) - UN Security Council Resolution 947 is a step forward in resolving the problem of UN Protected Areas (UNPAs), Croatian Foreign Minister Mate Granic told reporters today upon return from New York. Granic said the Croatian Parliament would assess the work of the UN mission after further one hundred days, in line with its resolution on the UNPROFOR mandate. Granic said the latest UNSC resolution did not authorize UNPROFOR to use force, which was unrealistic to expect. "The resolution provides a framework for a peaceful settlement acceptable to Croatia," Granic said and added that the UN Security Council called on states which emerged after the collapse of the former Yugoslav federation to recognize one another within their internationally accepted borders. "It is significant that the Contact Group is given a mandate to draw up a plan for the reintegration of occupied Croatian territories," Granic said. "An acceptable plan would include equally strong pressure on Serbia and Serb rebels in Knin," he said and added: "On the political front we have managed to achieve what is important at the moment. Nevertheless the diplomatic struggle continues." The Foreign Minister concluded by saying that US congressmen in Washington pledged full assistance and support for Croatia to enter international financial institutions and for important bilateral projects. Granic participated in the UN General Assembly session in New York as a member of the Croatian delegation. He also went to Washington for talks with US high officials.
