KARLOVAC, Oct 3 (Hina) - Croatian Karlovac Police today held a
press conference over an incident at the weekend in Turanj when
west Bosnian refugees assaulted UNHCR workers.
The incident left two Moslem refugees seriously wounded.
The UNHCR workers were handing out pamphlets calling on the
refugees, now marooned at Turanj, to return home to Velika Kladusa.
The refugees were offended by some of the pamphlets which were
signed by Bosnian Vice-President Ejup Ganic, police told
journalists.
The outraged refugees attacked the UNHCR representatives who
tried to find shelter in a UN vehicle. The refugees demolished the
vehicle claiming Bosnian Army's Fifth Corps soldiers were inside.
They wanted UN peacekeepers to bring the soldiers to them. A
commotion ensued and a Polish peacekeeper opened fire wounding the
two Moslems.
Karlovac Police were expecting UN Civilian Police (UNCIVPOL)
to issue a report on the incident.
Karlovac Police last week arrested fifty refugees trying to
illegally enter the unoccupied part of Croatia at Belajske Poljice,
police said.
Last week Slovene Police returned six Moslem refugees who had
crossed Croatian-Slovene border. They had to be returned to the
refugee convoy at Turanj, the press conference was told.
