U.N. PROTECTION FORCE PROPOSES TO DEMILITARIZE SARAJEVO

SARAJEVO, Aug 8 (Hina) - The commander of the U.N. peacekeepers in Bosnia-Herzegovina, British Lieutenant-General Michael Rose, sent an unofficial proposal to the Bosnian-Herzegovinian and Serb sides on the entire demilitarization of the heavy weapons exclusion zone that rings Sarajevo. The Bosnian-Herzegovinian government was handed over the proposal last week, and the Bosnian Serb side was informed of this over a letter sent on Saturday by Lt. Gen. Rose to the commander of the Serb forces in Bosnia, General Ratko Mladic. Neither side has responded officially to Lt. Gen. Rose's proposal. A spokeswoman for the U.N. Protection Force (UNPROFOR) in Sarajevo, Claive Grimes, said today in Sarajevo that the demilitarization of the Bosnian capital would be probably carried out following the example of Mostar. In this way all armed persons should leave the city in a 20-kilometre radius from its centre, and the peacekeepers together with a certain number of policemen from both sides would ensure the security in the area.
