SARAJEVO, Aug 4 (Hina) - UN Special Envoy Akashi's recent warning
to the Serbs that air strikes could be used to prevent the removal
of heavy weaponry from UN-guarded arsenals has so far been
ineffective, a UN news conference in Sarajevo was told today.
UN spokesman Major Rob Annink said the Serbs yesterday took a
personnel carrier fitted with a three-barrel anti-aircraft cannon
through the Sarajevo heavy-weapons exclusion zone.
The carrier came from a military facility in Serb-held
Hadzici.
This would appear to confirm suspicions that, unknown to
UNPROFOR, a quantity of heavy artillery was kept at Hadzici - the
Serbs have never allowed UNPROFOR to inspect the Hadzici facility.
French UNPROFOR troops on Wednesday opened fire on Serb
snipers after they had wounded three civilians in a tramway near
the Holiday Inn Hotel. The Serbs retaliated prompting further fire
from French soldiers.
Annink said an agreement to end the sniping in Sarajevo was
signed on Wednesday but was not being adhered to.
"When we had a closer look at the copy that had been given to
the Serb side to sign, we noticed that the Serbs had altered the
text. They erased provisions which they considered unsuitable and
added others without consulting anybody," Annink said.
