BOSNIAN SERBS FAIL TO ABIDE BY NATO ULTIMATUM, U.N. SAYS

SARAJEVO, Aug 1 (Hina) - United Nations officials in Sarajevo repeatedly underlined in their statements last week that every day Bosnian Serb forces were firing from anti-aircraft guns and mortars inside a 20 km weapons exlusion zone surrounding the eastern Moslem-held town of Gorazde. Although UN peace-keepers deployed in the area did not actually see the weapons, UN officials say there is no doubt that the weapons are there. The problem is that the Serb forces move their weapons all the time and deny UN peace-keepers movement through terrritory under their control. For this reason the UN has urged NATO aircraft to step up reconnaissance missions over the area. UNPROFOR spokesman Major Rob Annink told reporters in Sarajevo on Monday that it could be said with certainty that the Serbs did not abide by a NATO ultimatum on the withdrawal of heavy weapons from the UN-designated safe areas. Asked about the actual number of Serb heavy weapons in the exlusion zones around Gorazde and Sarajevo, UN officials said they had no authority yet to release exact data. Annink said UNPROFOR got quite reliable information on the Serb weapons but stressed that the number of heavy weapons inside the safe areas changed on a daily basis. He added that the Serb forces around Gorazde and Sarajevo had tanks and long-range artillery. Foreign reporters with permission to move freely through Serb- controlled territory have been saying for days that they have seen big trucks loaded with tanks and artillery pieces on roads round the Bosnian capital. Annink would neither confirm nor deny allegations that about 20 tanks were stationed in a Serb barracks at Lukavica outside Sarajevo, which could be said were only partly under UN supervision.
