UNPROFOR ON YESTERDAY'S SERB ATTACK ON SINJ AREA

ZADAR, July 4 (Hina) - The U.N. Force command in Sector South issued a statement on Thursday in connection with yesterday's sudden attack of Serb paramilitary formations launched on the Sinj battlefield, UNPA South. UNPROFOR in Sector South are looking into the causes of this serious violation of ceasefire which took place in the south-eastern part of the disengagement line on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred between the Peruca dam and Bosnian border, said UNPROFOR adding that the Serb and Croatian sides exchanged small arms and machine-gun fire. It appears that the exchange of fire started after Serb forces' attempt to pull out one dead soldier and one injured from the disengagement zone, said information office of the U.N. Force command in Sector South. UNPROFOR members helped Serb forces to transport by a U.N. helicopter the dead and injured Serb soldiers and a Serb soldier wounded in the exchange of fire, said UNPROFOR's statement. The Croatian Army HQ of the Split district said on Wednesday that several armed members of the Serb paramilitary formations launched a sudden infantry attack on the positions of the Croatian Army in the area of Mount Dinara on the Sinj battlefield. Members of the Croatian Army repelled the attack. The enemy troops opened anti-aircraft cannon fire from the strongholds at Obodina Hill, Limar and Opsenjak, wounding two members of the Croatian Army. The three strongholds from which the enemy troops opened fire should have been under the UNPROFOR control according to the 29 March agreement, signed in Zagreb, and the cannons should have been pulled back 10 km from the disengagement line. 141303 MET jul 94
