NEGOTIATIONS IN CROATIAN PARLIAMENT

ZAGREB, June 2 (Hina) - The Croatian Parliament's chairman, Nedjeljko Mihanovic, said today that the forthcoming session might be expected for next 10 to 12 days. He told journalists that all representatives were to be present, since some passions should be subsided by that time. Asked whether he was expecting a treaty would be reached on the implementation of the interparty deal in the meantime, Mihanovic replied that he hoped it might be done, and pointed out that the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) abode by the deal. The opposition would propose their candidates for the deputy chairmen of the Parliament, whereas we would vote and appoint the best, said Mihanovic adding that the opposition should not suggest controversial candidates, when voting cannot be guaranteed. Asked whether the HDZ would make a concession to the opposition and return to the status quo ante (before the 24-May session), Mihanovic answered that such an act would rescind all legitimate decisions made by the majority in the Parliament, and also violate the Standing Orders. On behalf of the parliamentary opposition, Drazen Budisa, told journalists after today's two-hour-long session of the parliamentary opposition parties that those parties also stuck to the 18 May deal on the appointments on the key posts in the Croatian Parliament and all unanimous conclusions made in this respect. He announced that the opposition would make several initiatives within a few next days, and the public would be informed of that in due time. Commenting on Mihanovic's statement on the preparations for convening next sessions of the Croatian Parliament Drazen Budisa said that the return of the opposition deputies to the Parliament depended on whether agreement would be reached with the HDZ and what results the opposition's initiatives might yield. According to him, the opposition would try today to establish contact with the HDZ negotiators in order resume talks. 021718 MET jun 94
