SARAJEVO, May 5 (Hina) - UNPROFOR spokesman in Sarajevo Eric
Shapron said on Thursday that a German Transal aircraft was hit
yesterday with three rifle bullets fired from Serb positions in the
vicinity of Sarajevo airport. Neither the German ambassador, who
was aboard the plane, nor any other passenger or crew member had
been injured, but the airlift to Sarajevo was nevertheless
discontinued.
Eric Shapron told reporters that a British UNPROFOR convoy
finally reached Gorazde today, after having been held up for days
by Serb guerrillas at Rogatica (50 km E. of Sarajevo). The
spokesman emphatically denied that the convoy had been allowed
through in exchange for a permission to Serb tanks to cross the
Sarajevo exclusion zone. Shapron said only two Serbian tanks
crossed the exclusion zone on Wednesday, mounted on carriers and
escorted by UNPROFOR.
According to Shapron, the tanks were coming from Pale and
heading for Trnovo. The Serbs had asked clearance for seven tanks,
but were allowed only two.
Replying to a journalist's comment that it had nevertheless
created a precedent, Shapron said two tanks did not represent a
danger to Sarajevo. When asked why should UNPROFOR give in to the
Serbs on such a point anyway, Shapron declined to answer.
"This was Mr. Akashi's decision and I do not want to comment
on it," Shapron said.
UNHCR Chris Janowski said that the final number of victims of
the Serb offensive on Gorazde totalled 715 dead and 1,900 wounded.
