PRESIDENT IZETBEGOVIC'S LETTER TO PRESIDENT TUDJMAN

SARAJEVO, May 1 (Hina) - The President of the Republic of Bosnia- Herzegovina, Alija Izetbegovic, sent a letter to the President of the Republic of Croatia, Dr. Franjo Tudjman, last evening. The content of the letter is following: More than a month ago we signed together the Washington agreements, which opened new prospects for relations between Bosniac and Croat peoples, as well as between Croatia and Bosnia- Herzegovina. Following the acceptance of the political documents mutual conflicts soon ceased, whereas roads for free movement of humanitarian convoys were opened to a certain extend. However, the implementation of other provisions, as well as possibilities the agreements offer, are obviously slow in coming in life. By this letter I want to confirm our interest in speedy and full implementation of the Washington agreements. Being sure that You share the same interest I plead with You to exert Your undoubted impact for urgent and effective materialization of the agreements. I think that without delay delegations of Bosniacs and Croats should meet with the goal to propose solutions to all remaining open issues, including a map of cantons, the issues of appointment and planning of personnel for the future government and presidency, establishing of a joint army command. One of the burning issues is also the making of a programme for return of refugees to their homes and opening of all kinds of communications. The delegations have met twice so far, but the scope and importance of their tasks is to take not only a few hours but a few days of work. After reaching agreements on proposals and adjusting views, an urgent session of the Parliament should be convened to ratify all that has been agreed on. I believe we may count on Your cooperation in prevention of activities of the opponents to the Washington agreements. Unfortunately, there are still those who oppose to the agreements and despite the will of the political leadership they are involved in committing barbarous activities on the ground aimed at undermining the already initiated process of normalization and returning developments to a conflict situation. I am also sure that Your announced forthcoming visit to Bosnia-Herzegovina would contribute to the realization of the goals, mentioned in this letter, concluded President Izetbegovic's letter to President Tudjman issued on Saturday evening. 011546 MET may 94
