TURANJ CHECKPOINT REOPENED TO UN CONVOYS

KARLOVAC, May 26 (Hina) - The Croatian authorities today reopened the Turanj checkpoint south of Karlovac to UN convoys and humanitarian assistance. The checkpoint, close to the contact line, has not been in use for nine months. Karlovac County Prefect Josip Jakovcic today met with UN and UNCRO officials, led by UNCRO coordinator in former Sector North, Kenya's Modibo Ocren. Jakovcic told the meeting about the opening of the checkpoint and the rehabilitation of the war-damaged neighbourhood of Turanj, where fifty persons had already returned. UNCRO representatives and EU monitors expressed concern over the presence of military forces of both sides in the disengagement zone. Prefect Jakovcic emphatically denied there were any Croatian troops in the disengagement zone. It was agreed that a joint UNCRO and Croatian army commission would inspect the zone and settle the matter. (hina) as 261940 MET may 95
