SARAJEVO, May 3 (Hina) - UN Ukranian peacekeepers prevented a
Bosnian Serb attempt overnight to seize back two antiaircraft guns
from a UN-guarded weapons depot in the Sarajevo suburb of Ilidza,
the UN in Sarajevo said today.
There were at least five antiaircraft guns, four tanks and a
larger number of mortars in the UN depot.
Several hundred artillery pieces were stored at UN weapons
collection sites around Sarajevo after Serbs handed them over to
UNPROFOR in 1994 following an ultimatum.
UN military observers have counted about 1,000 armed incidents
in the Sarajevo area in the last 24 hours in which one civilian has
been killed and five people have been wounded.
The UN said that Serbs had fired four mortar rounds on the
Sarajevo district of Sedrenik.
UN and Serb officials were meeting today to discuss the
functioning of Sarajevo airport.
UN spokesman Alexander Ivanko said that Serbs demanded that a
new agreement be signed, their office be opened at the airport and
the UN release an official statement to confirm that the airport
belonged to the Serbs.
UN officials resolutely rejected such demands and called for
the resumption of air traffic under the same conditions the airport
operated until 20 days ago when humanitarian flights had been
suspended after Serb forces opened fire at a US aircraft.
