ZAGREB, May 2 (Hina) - The UN Secretary General's special envoy,
Yasushi Akashi, issued a statement last night on the latest
developments in Croatia. Following is the full text of statement:
"Following the reports of escalating hostilities in Sector
West and elsewhere in the United Nations Peace Forces area of
operations, I called together representatives of the Croatian
Government and the Serb authorities in Knin to urge an immediate
truce and discussion of a lasting cease-fire.
The parties met for more than six hours and have agreed to
meet again tomorrow under my auspices. My objective is to bring an
end to the fighting, resume dialogue and build confidence between
the parties.
It is of utmost importance that stability is restored to the
affected areas in Croatia and I urge the parties to exhibit maximum
restraint in this critical period until agreement can be reached."
