SARAJEVO, March 29 (Hina) - U.N. special envoy Yasushi Akashi today
called on the Bosnian government and Karadzic's Serbs to restrain
themselves and respect the agreement on ending hostilities to
prevent a new and greater war in Bosnia.
Akashi's special statement from UNPROFOR headquarters in
Sarajevo, explained that 'the conflicting sides seemed to have
decided on dragging Bosnia into a new war with unforeseen
consequences for the entire region'.
Akashi said that the latest Bosnian Army efforts in Tuzla and
Travnik blatantly violated the cease fire agreement signed on
December, 31, 1994.
The U.N. equally condemned Serb artillery attacks on 'safe
havens'.
The statement expressed great concern over Serb attacks
against Mostar and Konjic, sniper fire at civilians in Sarajevo,
the security of Sarajevo airport being jeopardized and the use of
heavy weapons within 20kms of the Bosnian capital.
The Sarajevo UNPROFOR headquarters said commanders of the
'blue helmets' for the former Yugoslavia and Bosnia-Hercegovina,
general Bernard Janvier and Rupert Smith respectively, this morning
traveled to Naples. They were expected to meet with the NATO
southern Europe commander, Admiral Leyton Smith, to discuss the
deteriorating situation in Bosnia, UNPROFOR spokesman, Russian
Alexander Ivanko, said in Sarajevo.
