ZAGREB, Feb 13 (Hina) - A Croatian organization for the protection
of the human rights of detained and missing persons today sent an
open letter to the UN special representative for the former
Yugoslavia, Yasushi Akashi.
The organization Apel (appeal) reminded that many families
were gathering every day at the Wall of Truth outside the UN
headquarters in Zagreb to say prayers for the killed, missing and
detained people.
The organization appealed to Akashi and the international
community for help in obtaining the release of detained persons,
learning the truth about missing persons and repatriating the
displaced to their homes in Serb-occupied areas under UN
protection.
The letter recalled atrocities committed during Serb
aggression against Croatia, emphasizing that 600 Croatians had been
killed and over 12,000 Croatians and non-Serbs had been expelled
during UNPROFOR's two-year mission.
Apel acitivists also left a book at the gate of the UN
compound with 10,423 signatures of support from Vinkovci residents.
Books with signatures of support from residents of other
Croatian towns and villages would be left for Akashi every week at
the same place.
