SARAJEVO, 21 Oct (Hina) - IFOR engineering units yesterday
completed the construction of a back-up road linking the Bosnian
capital of Sarajevo and the eastern Bosnian town of Gorazde. The
road was opened by IFOR South-West Sector commander General De
Lambert and the head of engineering units, Brigadier Bick. #L#
The road, which was handed over to Federation authorities for
use, is 125 km long and its construction lasted nine months. Six
hundred soldiers from ten countries took part in its construction
and two of them were killed during the construction works, said
IFOR spokesman in Sarajevo, Simon Haselock.
The final works on the road will be financed by the
international community and performed by Bosnian army members.
The construction of the road was not envisaged by the Dayton
agreement. The construction of a modern road leading to Gorazde via
Federation territory is still uncertain because the project on its
construction has not been completed yet and because necessary
financial means have not been gathered.
The buses liking Sarajevo and Gorazde are still travelling
along the main pre-war road via the Serb-held Pale and Rogatica, as
the road which was opened yesterday is too narrow for large
vehicles.
