ZAGREB, Oct 1 (Hina) - The living conditions of displaced people
and refugees in Croatia have sharply deteriorated, Croatian
Victimological Society president Zvonimir Separovic said on
Tuesday.
"The situation is extremely critical. (...) The health of
displaced people is threatened, mortality has increased, and there
have been cases of suicide," he told a news conference in Zagreb.
Separovic recalled that the management of the Solaris hotel
complex outside the central Adriatic town of Sibenik had suspended
meals for 1,200 displaced people and refugees on Monday because the
government had failed to pay accommodation and food costs for the
past four months.
"Last night there was a danger of the displaced people and
refugees blocking the Adriatic road," he said and added: "According
to our information, food and sanitary conditions in all refugees
facilities are not not satisfactory."
Separovic said that he had written to Parliament Speaker
Vlatko Pavletic and Prime Minister Zlatko Matesa about the problem.
Ivo Sluganovic, representative of displaced people
accommodated in the Kaj Hotel in Marija Bistrica, about 25 km north
of Zagreb, said that a similar situation could happen there because
the government had not paid refugee accommodation costs for the
last three months.
"The food is bad and hot water is not available because
there's no fuel oil," Sluganovic said.
