Tudjman said that the purpose of the meeting was to specify
problems regarding the completion of the peaceful reintegration
process which had been successful so far, the statement said.
Klein said that the meeting between presidents Tudjman and
Milosevic in Athens had been extremely positive because a clear
sign had been emitted to the local citizens that the Croatian
Danubian area was an integral part of Croatia.
After listening to Klein, who offered a suggestion concerning
the dynamics of resolving the current problems as regards the
peaceful reintegration, Tudjman said that due to 80,000 displaced
persons from the Danubian area, Croatia could consent to the
extension of the UNTAES mandate for not more than three months
after the expiry of the existing mandate on 15 January.
During that period it was necessary to hold elections
consistent with the 1991 census, the UNTAES had to disarm the local
citizens and create conditions for the return of Croatian authority
which would bring back all displaced persons to the Danubian area,
Tudjman said.
Present at the talks were also Croatian Prime Minister Zlatko
Matesa, Croatian President's Chief-of-Staff Ivo Sanader, vice-
premier Ivica Kostovic, Presidential Adviser for interior affairs
Ivic Pasalic, Presidential assistant Major General Kresimir Kaspar,
President's deputy chief-of-staff Vesna Skare Ozbolt, Vukovar and
Osijek prefects Vlado Osust and Branimir Glavas and the head of the
Croatian government Office for Peaceful Reintegration of the
Croatian Danubian area Mirko Tankosic and Major General Slavko
Baric.
Accompanying General Klein were main UNTAES commander Joseph
Schoups, Klein's Chief-of-Staff John Harishon and UNTATS spokesman
Philip Arnold, the statement said.
