U.S. ENVOY MEETS TOP BOSNIAN GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS

SARAJEVO, May 23 (Hina) - Bosnian Ambassador to the UN Muhamed Sacirbey said in Sarajevo on Thursday that President Alija Izetbegovic would attend a meeting with US Secretary of State Warren Christopher in Geneva on June 2 to assess the progress of implementing the Dayton peace accords. The Geneva meeting was the subject of talks between senior Bosnian government officials and the visiting US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Canadian Affairs, John Kornblum. Kornblum said that the purpose of his mission in the region was to make it clear that the United States intended to remain strongly involved in the Bosnian peace process at the time of fast and important developments. Describing the talks with Izetbegovic as very useful, the US envoy said that the main topics discussed were preparations for country-wide elections, US views of changes in the Bosnian Serb entity and long-term stability in the Balkans. Kornblum said that the Geneva meeting would be very important for continuation of the peace process. Sacirbey reaffirmed his government's commitment to fully implementing the US-sponsored Dayton agreement. (hina) vm jn 231455 MET may 96
