The talks focused on the reintegration of the Danubian area,
as well as on relations between Croatia and Yugoslavia.
"We have optimistic views of the process, I would say that all
preconditions for the success of the peaceful reintegration have
been met," Granic said after the talks.
He added that "demilitarization is the key to the whole
process".
Klein stressed that he had strong support from both sides and
expressed his confidence that he would succeed.
The UN Transitional Administration for Eastern Slavonia,
Baranja and Western Srijem (UNTAES) was assuring the residents of
the area that they could remain in Croatia, that their ethnic
rights and their future were safe, Klein said, adding that the
locals had to be reassured in this so the process might succeed.
Granic announced that Klein is to meet Croatian government
representatives on Monday and recalled that the Zagreb-Belgrade
motorway would be opened on May 7. He added that he expected that
the removal of mines on the Zagreb-Belgrade railway would be
completed in six weeks time.
Speaking of relations between Croatia and Yugoslavia, Granic
announced the visit of the deputy to the Yugoslav Foreign Minister
to Zagreb on May 13. The talks would focus on further steps in the
normalization of bilateral relations.
