UNTAES spokesman Phillipe Arnold informed reporters that the
Zagreb-Belgrade highway is to be opened on Tuesday, May 7.
Seven kilometres of the road (which runs through occupied
territory) would be controlled by the UN Transitional
Administration for Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Srijem,
Arnold said.
The Temporary Administrator, General Klein, was doing
everything possible in order to protect oil wells from damage in
the occupied Djeletovci, Arnold said, adding that Klein had
discussed the issue with a negotiator from the Serb side, Goran
Hadzic, who had pledged that the oil wells would be safe.
Since 1991, Serb authorities have been intensively
drawing oil from the wells in Djeletovci owned by the Croatian Oil
Company (INA), and have recently begun transporting sections of the
wells into Serbia.
The Croatian government Office for establishing Croatian
authority in the occupied area warned Klein of the issue and asked
him to protect the wells.
