IFOR: MILITARY SITUATION IN BIH STABILIZING

SARAJEVO, 20 Apr (Hina) - Commander of IFOR ground forces Gen.Michael Walker told a press conference in Sarajevo on Saturday that the military situation in Bosnia-Herzegovina was stabilizing, and that the parties in BiH have been showing full readiness to fulfill all provisions of the peace agreement. Walker held the conference following a meeting with commanders of HVO, BiH and Bosnian Serb armies. He expressed his conviction that the relocating of forces to army barracks and collection of heavy arms would be finished in time. Walker would not indicate how many soldiers of the three armies were placed in barracks until 19 April. According to earlier information, there were 300,000 soldiers in BiH on the day of signing of the agreement of which at least half should have been disarmed. Walker stated that 700 permanent locations for relocation of military units were approved to date. NATO forces would check at least twice every location to ensure that the regulations of relocation are respected. Gen.Walker told reporters he requested all necessary measures in order to prevent the reoccurring of incidents such as yesterday's near Bosanska Otoka when a fighting nearly broke out between Serbs and Bosnian Muslims.
