Agreement on Croatian occupied areas. #L#
His main goal was to retain a multiethnic composition in
eastern Slavonia and to protect property and citizens, Klein told
reporters after the meeting.
Leaving of Serb citizens from the area would mean failure of
our mission, Klein said.
Describing the implementation of the peace plan as "very
smooth", with the cooperation of the Croatian and Yugoslav
governments, Klein stressed that their support, as well as support
of the media would be necessary in the future. He said he is to
hold meetings with Milosevic every month.
Klein announced the opening of the highway from the occupied
areas towards Osijek, in the beginning used only for IFOR troops,
and the Zagreb-Belgrade highway.
He especially stressed the establishment of economic relations
among Croatia, Serbia and Hungary, which is to be followed by
opening of borders.
The people living in eastern Slavonia, Baranja and western
Srijem should be convinced that the presence of the UNTAES was
serious and that their future lies in the reconstruction of
economy, Klein said.
He added that the UNTAES had 5,000 soldiers, tanks, Ukrainian
helicopters and IFOR's air support and that there was no reason to
be afraid. The UNTAES would establish civilian administration and
order, Klein said.
