Speaking to the gathered Vinkovci residents, Klein said that
the war is over and that all displaced people would return to the
area after its demilitarization.
Klein was received by the Vukovar County Prefect Vlado Osust.
The talks were also attended by the head of the Croatian Government
Office for temporary administration for the establishment of
Croatian authority in eastern Slavonia, Baranja and western Srijem,
Ivica Vrkic, Vukovar County Deputy Prefects Rudolf Koenig and
Dragutin Guzovski as well as Vukovar, Ilok and Vinkovci mayors.
After the meeting, Klein told reporters that the Slovak
engineering units were cleaning the area around Lipovac and that,
after the area was cleaned, the Zagreb-Belgrade highway would be
opened. Railway traffic between Sid and Vinkovci would also be
opened soon, Klein said.
After Klein stated that 'the Serbs were living in great fear,
the reporters asked him what they were afraid of. Klein answered
that the Serbs were conscious of the fact that they had done a big
mistake and that they were afraid of the consequences.
'The Croatian-Hungarian and Serbian border should be opened as
soon as possible so that people could communicate normally. I
believe that everything will come into its own place gradually',
Klein said.
