IFOR TO REMOVE UNATHORIZED CHECKPOINTS IN BOSNIA

SARAJEVO, March 18 (Hina) - IFOR commanders in Bosnia-Herzegovina were not satisfied with the freedom of movement of civilians and were ready to take the necessary measures to remove unauthorized checkpoints, a NATO representative in Sarajevo said Monday. At a meeting with civilian officials from all sides, Gen. Smith explained what IFOR considered to be acceptable police procedures at checkpoints, the spokesman said. The full freedom of movement is essential for organizing the elections, Smith told the meeting. The IFOR headquarters published a special multicoloured flyer to that effect which is to be displayed in a conspicuous spot in all police stations. Checkpoints must be registered with international police and must not be manned by military forces, reads the flyer. The flyer warns in red letters that NATO will remove all unauthorized checkpoints in Bosnia-Herzegovina. (hina) jn as 181735 MET mar 96
