The British Council this year celebrates the 50th anniversary
of its work in Croatia. The library which contains a large reserve
of British literature is only a small part of the Council's
activities.
"The British Council has activities in all larger towns in
Croatia and, through various Croatian institutions it is active in
the fields of culture, science and business," Stewart said.
The new British Council director for central Europe, Helen
Meixner, is visiting Croatia at the moment and British Deputy
Foreign Minister, Nicholas Bonsor, is expected to arrive in Zagreb
on Wednesday when he will sign an agreement on cultural cooperation
between Croatia and Great Britain, together with Croatian
representatives.
The British Ambassador to Croatia, Gawin Hewitt, was also
present at the opening of the library.
