ZAGREB, Feb 18 (Hina) - The sixth election convention of the
Croatian Social Liberal Party (HSLS), national largest single
opposition group, elected new party leadership Sunday. #L#
Vlado Gotovac, 65, was overwhelmingly elected a new president
of the party, gaining 846 out of 896 votes.
New deputy presidents are Goran Granic, Jozo Rados, Ivo
Skrabalo and Zlatko Kramaric, while the post of secretary-general
went to retired general Karl Gorinsek.
The party delegates unanimously passed the resolution of the
convention titled "The Monopoly of Power -- Key Obstacle to Overall
Development of Croatia".
The resolution stressed that Croatia was neither a democratic
nor a social state -- as written down in the 1990 Constitution --
which caused fear as a dominant feature in the nation's public
life.
"Direct psychologic consequence of the unrealized democratic
system is fear in both private and public life, which hinders civic
initiatives in all fields, while the democratic deficit blocks
solving of amassed social problems and hampers an overall
political, economic and cultural development of Croatia as a
modern, European, democratic state," the resolution said, calling
the party members to double their efforts in order to eventually
"break the fatal monopoly of power" on the next elections.
