FOJNICA TRAINING CAMP WAS USED FOR PREPARING TERRORIST ATTACKS - I

I $ FOR SARAJEVO, Feb 17 (Hina) - Eleven suspects apprehended Thursday in an alleged terrorist training camp near Fojnica were last night delivered to the Bosnian Government, following talks between B-H Prime Minister Hasan Muratovic and IFOR General Michael Walker. At a press conference held at the IFOR headquarters in Sarajevo, IFOR representatives corrected the information released last night by a Bosnian police representative who said that the number of suspects was five. According to IFOR representatives, there were eight Bosnian citizens and three Iranians, one of whom had a diplomatic passports. The Bosnian authorities have pledged to deport the other two Iranians as soon as possible. According to US General Julian Burns attached to the IFOR headquarters in Sarajevo, the documents seized in the NATO raid on Thursday showed that the facility had been used for preparing terrorist activities, including an attack on one of IFOR's bases. Among other evidence, there was a detailed description of the IFOR French HQ in Sarajevo, complete with photographs and instructions on how to sneak into the building and kidnap the Serb liaison officer. But the instruction set December 1995 as the date of the action, so it was not clear whether it was a real plan or a theoretical analysis. "What we can say with certainty is that the Fojnica facility contained much more weapons than would have been necessary to ensure the self-defence of eleven men," IFOR spokesman John Kirkwood said. A Bosnian police representative said Friday that Fojnica was a centre for training anti-terrorist squads. But according to Col. Kirkwood, plastic toys filled with explosive, which were found on the premises, rather supported the terrorist camp hypothesis. Meanwhile, at a press conference organised at the Iranian embassy, spokesman Sayed Mohsen Kyasi read out a communique which qualified the IFOR raid as a "TV show enacted according to a scenario prepared in advance." "The Islamic Republic of Iran is proud of having assisted the unprotected people of Bosnia, who the aggressor stripped of their rights, during their most difficult moments," the communique said. The spokesman declined to answer any questions. (hina) vm as 171730 MET feb 96
